Next semester (in February), we will be reading Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. This book is significantly more difficult that books we have read already.

Often knowing the plot of a story can be very helpful when reading a book that is more difficult. In order to prepare for this assignment, please watch one of the following versions of the story OR read the Great Illustrated Classic version.

Decide on a project to do. Research historical details for your project.

On the first day back to class, you’ll share what you created with the rest of the class so be sure to save or document your project!

  • Draw a short graphic novel depicting a part of Suleman the Great’s reign

  • 1637: Dutch traders begin transporting slaves regularly

  • 1685 – France issues the Code Noir (Black Code), a law that decrees how slaves are to be treated in French colonies and restricts the freedoms and privileges of free people of African descent.

2. Prepare Your Scientist Presentation

On November 3, you’ll be doing a 5-minute presentation on a scientist. That’s NEXT WEEK!

Presentation Guidelines

  • 5 minutes or less
  • Must be engaging/interesting (DON’T BE BORING!)
  • Examples of previous presentations:
    • Short activity
    • Puppet show
    • Short skit
    • Video/animation
    • Playing a game
  • Practice your presentation before you come to class! Make sure it works and is less than 5 minutes.

3. Write a Paragraph about Your Scientist

Write 1 paragraph about your scientist using the format we’ve been practicing in class

Do NOT write a summary of the person’s life. Instead, focus on making a claim and then proving it.

Step 1: Make a claim about the person (based on your research).

Examples: 

  • Jim Thorpe was the most well-rounded athlete that ever lived.
  • Eleanor Roosevelt was as comforting to the American people during the Great Depression as her husband.
  • Steve Jobs forever changed the way we use computers.

Step 2: Write a paragraph that supports your claim. Make sure you have a topic sentence, evidence and analysis, and a connection back to the claim. Your paragraph should be between 5-10 sentences long.

Follow the traditional paper format and the handout example you were given in class.

Week 7 Homework 10-20-22

On November 4, you’ll be doing your presentation on a scientist. That’s in TWO WEEKS! Your presentation is 5 minutes. Also, you will turn in one well-written paragraph (please use the format you’re learning).

Write a short story to go with your map that you drew in class.

You can use one of these ideas or create your own:

  • Myth explaining how something on your map came to be
  • A historical highlight or momentous occasion that happened on your map
  • An everyday moment that explains how people interact

Use the CHECKLIST after you write to make sure you included everything.
