2. History Study

Spend 60+ minutes researching the following topic during this time period.

COLONIZING AMERICAS

1565 – 1763

  1. Read Usborne Encyclopedia of World History (UEWH) pgs 276-277, 320-323.
  2. Spend at least 45 additional minutes studying any resource focused on this time period (YouTube, documentary, picture book, magazine, etc.).

    As you study, fill out your Time Period Study worksheet.

    You must add information about at least one Key Person, one Key Event, and several Interesting Facts. If you want to do more, fill out more than one worksheet.

3. Timeline

  1. Add the following key dates or figures to your timeline.
  2. Add THREE additional dates that you find during your History Study.
  • 1585 – The Roanoke Colony is founded. It disappears and becomes known as the “Lost Colony.”
  • 1607 – The Jamestown Settlement is established.
  • 1609 – “Starving Time” at Jamestown. Only 60 out of 500 settlers survive the winter.
  • 1614 – The Dutch colony of New Netherland is established.
  • 1619 – The first African slaves arrive in Jamestown. The first representative government, the Virginia House of Burgesses, meets at Jamestown.
  • 1620 – Plymouth Colony is founded by the Pilgrims.
  • 1626 – The Dutch purchase Manhattan Island from the local Native Americans.
  • 1630 – Puritans found the city of Boston.
  • 1692 – The Salem witch trials begin in Massachusetts. Twenty people are executed for witchcraft.
  • 1718 – The city of New Orleans is founded by the French.

4. Writing Assignment

This week we have a fun writing assignment!

Write a letter home as if you were an alien visiting Earth for summer camp. Instructions are in your binder under the Writing Assignments tab.

When you’re done, use your checklist to make sure you’ve included everything.

And don’t forget to have your parent proofread and sign your coversheet!
