This week you have TWO separate timeline assignments. (We started this in class.)

Timeline Assignment 1

Finish adding the following Anchor Dates to your timeline.

  • 1440 — Gutenberg invents the moveable type printing press
  • 1506 — Leonardo DaVinci finishes painting the Mona Lisa
  • 1564 — Shakespeare is born
  • 1492 — Columbus discovers America
  • Nov 11, 1620 — Pilgrims land in Plymouth
  • 1680 — Blackbeard the pirate is born
  • July 2, 1776 — American Declaration of Independence is signed
  • Spring 1820 — Joseph Smith First Vision
  • June 20, 1837 — Queen Victoria becomes queen of England
  • July 24, 1847 – LDS Pioneers arrive in Salt Lake Valley
  • April 12, 1861 — US Civil War begins
  • Oct 15, 1878 — Thomas Edison invents the light bulb
  • Feb 21, 1885 — First car invented
  • Dec 17, 1903 — Wright Brothers fly airplane
  • Oct 24, 1929 — Great Depression in US begins
  • Sept 1, 1939 — End of WWII
  • Sept 11, 2001 — 9/11

Timeline Assignment 2

  1. Add the following key dates to your timeline.
  2. Add THREE additional dates that you find during your History Study.
  • 1418 – Portuguese begin to explore coast of Africa under Prince Henry the Navigator
  • 1488 – Bartolomeu Dias sails around southern tip of Africa
  • 1492 – Christopher Columbus “discovers” America while searching for India
  • 1497 – Vasca Da Gama reaches India – opens trading route
  • 1497 – John Cabot searches for the Northwest Passage
  • 1502 – Amerigo Vespucci identifies America as “New World” (America named after him)
  • 1519 – Hernan Cortes reaches Tenochtitlan (modern-day Mexico)
  • 1520 – Ferdinand Magellan attempts to sail around the world (He dies, but his crew returns)
  • 1532 – Francisco Pizarro conquers Incan empire

History Study

Spend 60+ minutes researching the following time period.

AGE OF DISCOVERY
1500 – 1636

  1. Spend at least 15 minutes studying in your History Survey text.
  2. Spend at least 45 additional minutes studying any resource focused on this time period (YouTube, documentary, picture book, magazine, etc.).

    Here is the Wikipedia article on this time period. (You can count reading this as part of your 45 minutes.)

    3. As you study, fill out your Time Period Study worksheet.

    You must add information about at least one Key Person, one Key Event, and several Interesting Facts. If you want to do more, fill out more that one worksheet.

Writing Assignment

Write a short, reflective 1-2 page paper that answers the following questions:

  1. What scholar level do you consider yourself at (Apprentice, Journeyman, Master) and why?
  2. Why are you taking this class?
  3. What specific goals do you have for the class (e.g., turn in all assignments, complete 2 hours of homework each week, turn everything in on time , stay awake in class, speak up and participate, or something else …)
  4. How do you feel about history and writing?

Make sure your paper follows the Written Paper Format.

Reading Assignment

Be sure you have a copy of The King’s Fifth.
