2. History Study

Spend 60+ minutes researching the following topic during this time period.

Scramble for Africa

1870-1914

  1. Read Usborne Encyclopedia of World History (UEWH) – pages 328-329, 346-347.
  2. Spend at least 60 minutes studying any resource focused on this time period (YouTube, documentary, picture book, magazine, etc.).

    As you study, fill out your Time Period Study worksheet.

    You must add information about at least one Key Person, one Key Event, and several Interesting Facts. If you want to do more, fill out more than one worksheet.

3. Timeline

  1. Add the following key dates or figures to your timeline.
  2. Add ONE additional date that you find during your History Study.
  • 1806 – Britain takes control of Cape Colony.
  • 1841 – David Livingston starts to explore Africa.
  • 1879 – The Zulus are defeated.
  • 1884 – European leaders divide Africa between them.
  • 1902 – The British defeat the Boers.

4. Writing Assignment

Write a 2-3 page typed journal entry as if you are an immigrant traveling to the US for the first time. You have left your home and headed to the United States.

In your journal entry, some thoughts you could consider sharing: 

  • How old you are and how you fit into your family
  • Who in your family is with you and who you have left behind
  • Where you are from and what it is like
  • Where in the US you will land and where you are ultimately trying to settle
  • What you’re feeling about leaving your home & about the new place you are going to
  • What makes you worried or afraid
  • What your hopes and dreams are
