Be sure to use the following as you write:

  • Interesting Adjectives
  • Exciting Adverbs

Use the CHECKLIST after you write to make sure you included everything.

Make sure your paper follows the Written Paper Format.

Week 0 — Homework for the first day of class

A couple of things you need to do before the first day of class:

1. Get your books for fall semester.

2. Bring your Encyclopedia of World History with you on the first day of class! We will be doing an activity where you will need your book!

If you are a slower reader, you may want to start reading The King’s Fifth since you’ll only have two weeks to finish it once school starts.

3. Watch videos on the Age of Exploration.

We’ll be talking about this time period in history during the first day of class. The more you know before you come, the more you’ll be able to participate! (You don’t need to watch all the videos, but please watch at least the first few.)

  • Pineapple should be banned as a pizza topping.
  • Online school is better than meeting in person.
  • Fish make the best pets.
  • Hiking is a great way to spend time with family.

3. Create an outline or a bubble map for your topic.

If you choose to do an outline, you can use page 104 or 105 in your book.

If you choose to do a bubble map, use the format that we talked about in class, and I showed you in the video.

4. Write a rough draft of your persuasive essay.

Using either our outline or your bubble map, consider working in this order:

  1. Select your persuasive topic position.
  2. Brainstorm at least 3 categories of “support” for your topic and what your evidence/examples for each category could be.
  3. Create a “rough” thesis statement (you will possibly revise it later)
  4. Brainstorm a possible introduction and conclusion.
  5. Write your thesis statement and paragraphs for each category of support.
  6. As you write, continue to review your thesis statement. Does it need to be revised as you write to better fit the paragraphs you end up writing?
  7. Write your introduction and your conclusion.

5. Revise your essay.

Read through your essay. Ask yourself TWO questions:

  1. Does each paragraph help “prove” the thesis?
  2. Does it all make sense if you were reading it for the first time?

6. Proofread your essay.

Give your essay to a parent to read and proofread. Make changes based on their comments.

7. Turn in your essay.
