1. Timeline – Part 1

This week you have TWO separate timeline assignments. (We started this in class.)

Timeline Assignment 1

Finish adding the following Anchor Dates to your timeline.

  • 1440 — Gutenberg invents the moveable type printing press
  • 1492 — Columbus “discovers” America
  • 1506 — Leonardo DaVinci finishes painting the Mona Lisa
  • 1564 — Shakespeare is born
  • Nov 11, 1620 — Pilgrims land in Plymouth
  • 1718 — Blackbeard the pirate dies
  • July 2, 1776 — American Declaration of Independence is signed
  • Spring 1820 — Joseph Smith First Vision
  • June 20, 1837 — Queen Victoria becomes queen of England
  • July 24, 1847 – LDS Pioneers arrive in Salt Lake Valley
  • April 12, 1861 — US Civil War begins
  • Oct 15, 1878 — Thomas Edison invents the light bulb
  • Feb 21, 1885 — First car invented
  • Dec 17, 1903 — Wright Brothers fly first airplane
  • Oct 24, 1929 — Great Depression in US begins
  • 1939-1945 — World War II
  • Sept 11, 2001 — 9/11
  • ??? – Your Birthday

2. History Study

Spend 60+ minutes researching the following time period.

AZTEC & INCA EMPIRES
1200 – 1532

  1. Read Usborne Encyclopedia of World History (UEWH) pgs 278-283.
  2. Spend at least 45 additional minutes studying any resource focused on this time period (YouTube, documentary, picture book, magazine, etc.).

    NOTE: I have not previewed all of these videos and can not vouch for all of the content.)

    Here is the short article on this time period. (You can count reading this as part of your 45 minutes.)
  3. As you study, fill out your Time Period Study worksheet.

    You must add information about at least one Key Person, one Key Event, and several Interesting Facts. If you want to do more, fill out more that one worksheet.

3. Timeline – Part 2

Timeline Assignment 2

  1. Add the following key dates & figures to your timeline. (All dates are CE.)
  2. Add THREE additional dates that you find during your History Study.
  • 900-1150 – The Toltec civilization flourishes
  • 1200 – Inca tribe found city of Cuzco
  • 1325 – City of Tenochtitlan is founded (later becomes capital of Aztec Empire)
  • 1428 – Aztec Empire is founded
  • 1440 – Montezuma I rules Aztec Empire – Aztec Empire reaches its peak
  • 1493 – Incan Empire reaches its peak
  • 1520 – Montezuma II killed by the Spanish
  • 1521 – Hernando Cortes destroys the Aztec Empire
  • 1532 – Francisco Pizarro destroys the Incan Empire

4. Writing Assignment

Write a short, reflective 1-2 page paper that answers the following questions:

  1. What scholar level do you consider yourself at (Apprentice, Journeyman, Master) and why?
  2. Why are you taking this class?
  3. What specific goals do you have for the class (e.g., turn in all assignments, complete 2 hours of homework each week, turn everything in on time , stay awake in class, speak up and participate, or something else …)
  4. How do you feel about history and writing?

Make sure your paper follows the Written Paper Format.

When you’re finished, use the Checklist in your binder to check your work.

5. Reading Assignment

Begin reading The King’s Fifth. (pgs 1-123)

We will discuss this book in TWO WEEKS – on Sept 16.
