4. Writing Assignment

Finish up your persuasive essay and email it to me!

Here’s all the steps:

1. Watch this video.

Watch the following video where I give you an overview of how to brainstorm and write your persuasive essay.

2. Select a Topic

Select a persuasive topic to write about. This is the topic you’ve been thinking about the last couple of weeks.

Topic Examples

  • Reading a book should always happen before watching the movie.
  • Football is better than basketball.
  • Pineapple should be banned as a pizza topping.
  • Online school is better than meeting in person.
  • Fish make the best pets.
  • Hiking is a great way to spend time with family.

3. Create an outline or a bubble map for your topic.

If you choose to do an outline, you can use page 104 or 105 in your book.

If you choose to do a bubble map, use the format that we talked about in class, and I showed you in the video.

4. Write a rough draft of your persuasive essay.

Using either our outline or your bubble map, consider working in this order:

  1. Select your persuasive topic position.
  2. Brainstorm at least 3 categories of “support” for your topic and what your evidence/examples for each category could be.
  3. Create a “rough” thesis statement (you will possibly revise it later)
  4. Brainstorm a possible introduction and conclusion.
  5. Write your thesis statement and paragraphs for each category of support.
  6. As you write, continue to review your thesis statement. Does it need to be revised as you write to better fit the paragraphs you end up writing?
  7. Write your introduction and your conclusion.

5. Revise your essay.

Read through your essay. Ask yourself TWO questions:

  1. Does each paragraph help “prove” the thesis?
  2. Does it all make sense if you were reading it for the first time?

6. Proofread your essay.

Give your essay to a parent to read and proofread. Make changes based on their comments.

7. Turn in your essay.

I want to read your essay!

Please email me a link to read your essay in Google Drive at taperkey@gmail.com.

Congratulations!!
